The number of lasting powers of attorney (LPAs) registered annually has tripled between 2010 and 2015.
The increase in the number of LPAs being registered may be due to a drive to increase public awareness, and a desire of people to plan for the future.
An LPA is a legal document that appoints people to make decisions for you and manage your affairs, when you are no longer able to do it yourself. Typically, this would be trusted family members of your immediate family, a loved one or a legal professional.
Having LPAs in place means the people you trust most can look after your ‘property & financial affairs’ and ‘health & welfare’, without having to ask permission for any decision they make from the Government’s Court of Protection.
It is important that people understand the benefits of planning ahead, regardless of our age or health. Essentially, any adult with any family or assets should make LPAs and a Will, so their loved ones do not suffer as a result of them not doing so.
